AROUND 20,000 PEOPLE ARE EXPECTED TO VISIT AYIA NAPA DURING THE AYIA NAPA SOCCER FESTIVAL
A press conference took place in the CYTA building, for the one of the most important football academy tournament in Europe.
The Ayia Napa Soccer Festival is getting underway on April 8th, and 334 are taking part in the tournament. The teams participating in the tournament are not only Cypriot football academies, several teams are visiting Ayia Napa from Great Britain, Lebanon, Jordan, Romania and Poland. Approximately 5000 children, between the age of 6 and 16 will take part in the tournament, and they will be separated into ten different age groups (2001-2010). Ayia Napa will host around 20,000 visitors, with 750 of them from abroad. The games will be run by 90 referees, and the tournament will be supported by 50 volunteers.
On Thursday 30/03, the organizers of Ayia Napa Soccer Festival gave a press conference in the CYTA building in Nicosia. Cytavision will be for the second consecutive year, the media supporter of the festival, as it will broadcast live the six finals. Ayia Napa Soccer Festival will be under the auspices of the Cyprus Football Federation, and the Ayia Napa Municipality. Pascal Education, Ocean Basket, MS Jacovides, Nurofen, Futoro, and the Water World Water Park are also amongst the sponsors of the Festival. Debbie’s Cookies took care of the press conference’s catering.
Mr. Christos Constantinou, from SoccerWorldCyprus, the organizers of the tournament, stated that the festival is considered to be very important for local tourism, and also tourism from abroad. He added that due to the Ayia Napa Soccer Festival, the tourism period of Ayia Napa has been expanded. According to Mr. Constantinou, “The Ayia Napa Municipality will invest €1.2m in the next three years, for the improvement of Ayia Napa’s football stadiums”.
Five hours of live broadcast
“Cytavision supports the most important football academy tournament of Cyprus by broadcasting the finals of the Finals of the festival. We hope what the children participating will one day play for the First League football teams”, stated Mrs. Antigoni Modestou for CYTA. The total time of broadcasting by Cytavision will be 5 hours.
Mr. Charis Kyrillou, in charge of the Children Championships of the Cyprus Football Federation, stated that “In those ages, the most important aspect is sportsmanship, and not the first place”.
“We invested because we believed in it”
According to Mrs. Maria Solomou, for the Cyprus Tourism Organization, “We will be supporting the Ayia Napa Municipality, as they have invested in athletic tourism. Cyprus Tourism Organization has invested in the Ayia Napa Soccer Festival, because we believed in it. We are delighted to see that visitors from abroad are constantly multiplying”.
The coaches’ role
The tournament is supported by the Cypriot Football Coach Association. According to Mr. Kouloumbris, the President of the Association, “ The coach must be a role model both for the children and the parents. The members of the Association will be watching the games, ready to intervene if a coach is not acting in the proper manners”.
The match program for the group stages is out. The games begin on April 8th, in the morning. Some of the age categories will have group games until April 11th. The semi-finals, the finals, and the award ceremonies will take place on Wednesday, April 12th. You can find the match program here.
